Writing Competition I

Course Description In this course, students will write and submit compositions to be considered for The Institute for Excellence in Writing’s Magnum Opus Magazine, which is a premier showcase of work from students around the world.

The first four weeks of this course will focus on teaching students the basics of the IEW writing method so that they can compose a piece that adheres to Magnum Opus Magazine’s guidelines. Students will engage in text reconstruction, which requires them to recreate existing passages in their own words. They will learn outlining strategies and receive lessons in foundational writing mechanics. Students will compose several one-paragraph writing assignments following this methodology.

In the second half of this course, students will learn specific stylistic techniques that they can employ to infuse their writing with more description and meaning. Students will select their favorite compositions from the first half of class, and they will spend the second half revising and improving these works. At the conclusion of the course, each child will have prepared at least one submission to send to the magazine.
