Course Description
  • Students will study different types of literature thoughtfully and critically, pick up significant details and identify patterns, and develop a deep and precise understanding of the form, craft, and meaning of a text
  • Our classes cover: theme discussions, vocabulary, literature analysis, in-depth reading, and writing prompts
Teacher Mr. Daniel from Brighter Bee Academy

Mr. Daniel has 19 years of experience teaching English Language Arts to elementary students. He is a certified reading specialist in Massachusetts. He was a 2015 Massachusetts Teacher of the Year finalist. He enjoys teaching in creative ways and integrating new content to inspire all learners.

Grade This course is appropriate for 2nd grade students.
Class Time

Thursday at 7-8 p.m. EST

There is no class during the Thanksgiving week

Part I: Fables and Myths
1 The Fox and the Crab  History of Aesop Fables 

Character, Setting, Moral 

Homework: Vocabulary Worksheet with words from today’s  reading passage.

2  The Old Lion and the  Fox Summarizing and Outlining: Create outline in class. Homework: Rewrite the story in your own words with one of  the elements modified.

Homework: Read Chapters 1-2 of The Cricket in Times Square and answer Reading Questions with Short Answer Responses.

5 Chapters 1-2  Characters & Setting  

Homework: Read Chapters 2-5 and answer Reading Questions

6 Chapters 2-5  Conflict, Characterization, Drawing Inferences Homework: Research Questions about Crickets. Read  Chapters 5-7 and answer Reading Questions
7  Chapters 5-7  In Class Writing Activity: Write one paragraph about what  Chester Cricket thinks and feels in his new cage. Homework: Read Chapters 7-9 and answer Reading  Questions. Draw a picture of Chester in his cage to go with  your class paragraph.
8  Chapters 7-9  Compare and Contrast Tucker Mouse and The Miser. Homework: Read Chapters 9-12 and answer Reading  Questions.
9  Chapters 9-12  Homework: Read Chapters 12-14 and answer Reading  Questions.
